Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream speaks his mind to the MM Doc
DRUGS
I OBJECT to the fact that you can't walk into any drugstore and
buy any f***ing drug you want be it amphetamines, Ecstacy, heroin, LSD,
anything you like. But you can buy alcohol, and the damage I've seen
that do to people -the physical and spiritual damage it's completely
frightening. lt's the money the Government makes out of cigarettes and
alcohol, but then, they could make a lot of money out of chemical as
well. If I want to take drugs, I should be allowed to walk in to a
chemist and buy them.
THE HUMAN RACE
I DON'T give a shit about the human race. I love the
planet and I love the animals and I love the sky, but the human race is
kind of deplorable, with odd exceptions. I mean there are people that I
love and music I love that means a lot to me but, although l want to
love the human race, I can't because it's so bad.
SOUL MUSIC
THIS term soul music has got to reclaimed. I'm really against
categorising music, saying, 'This is country & western, this is soul'. I
think Hank Williams is soul music, Gram Parsons is soul music, the
Stones are soul, so is Boy George's new record. Anything that makes me
feel strongly is soul music. It doesn't need to be black.
THE POWER THAT BE
THE people that run the world - like the Conservative
Party here orthe Republican Party in America, or any government- theyre
intelligent people, but they abuse their itelligence. Thge Tories, for
instance, don't know that when they freeze child benefit at £6.85 for
the third year in a row, that they are hurting people. They don't not
know that, when they close mental hospitals those people will end up on
the streets. They're deliberately malevolent. They're uncaring, and
there's no love in their hearts, and I really do believe they're evil.
NATURAL RHYTHM
I THINK you're born with it. Some people I know don't
have any rhythm at all. If you try and get them to keep time, they can't
do it. White musicians trying to play funk music, especially rock bands,
always get it totally wrong, because they don't realise the musical
accents are in a completely different place, and the spacin of the notes
and of the voice, is completely different from white rock music. And
I don't think you can learn that. It's totally environmental. That's
why we're a white rock band. We'd never dream of trying to play funk
music. I'd love to be able to play Iike sly Stone or George Clinton,
but it's impossible. I just don't have it, although I love that music.
INDIE ROCK
I THINK the term independant rock is just another name for
inadequate. A lot of these groups shouldn't be allowed to make records,
they shouldn't be in bands, these people, because the'yve got nothing to
offer at all. There are too many people in the world and there are
certainly too many f***ing rock groups.
IDEALS
I'VE got my own ideals, I've got my world view, and all I can do
is live my life the way I want to live it. I think I'm a better person
than most of the people you see walking down the street or most of the
people you meet. I think I'm more aware of everything in the world and
I'm more aware of people's feelings. I know that I'm more intelligent
than most people. I know I have a vision and I know that I intuitively
understand things more than most people. You can say that I'm arrogant
but that's the way l am.
INNOVATION
ROCK music is not innovative and never will be. It's three
chords, and the lyrics are about f***ing. Generally, that's the appeal.
It's primitive and that's what's qood about it-- I love primitive
things. People in jazz like John Coltrane and Ornene Coleman, they're
innovators, but rock is at its best when it's basic. No rock groups has
ever taken it out there, up in space, apart from maybe Jimi Hendrix,
like those jazz guys do.
'CHERRY BOMB'
I THINK it's high art. I think it's the pinnacle of
civilization. It's as good as anyhing that's ever been created in the
world - any film, book painting - it moves me. It makes me feel f***ing
great, the same as The Ramones or MC5. These records mean something to
me; they're soul records.
